Lahore Qalandars Penalized for Alleged Ball Tampering in PSL Defeat to Karachi Kings

LAHORE, Pakistan – A dramatic finish to a Pakistan Super League (PSL) clash was overshadowed by controversy as Lahore Qalandars were penalized for alleged ball tampering during their defeat to Karachi Kings.

The incident occurred just before the final over, with Karachi requiring 14 runs to win. Match officials awarded five penalty runs to Karachi after determining that Fakhar Zaman had “unfairly changed the condition of the ball,” a claim the player has strongly denied.

Following the decision, the ball was replaced at the batting side’s request, reducing Karachi’s target to nine runs off the final six deliveries. Karachi Kings capitalized on the advantage, sealing victory with three balls to spare.

Despite the controversy, Lahore captain Shaheen Afridi delivered an impressive performance with the ball, claiming four wickets. However, his efforts were ultimately not enough to secure a win.

A hearing into the incident was held immediately after the match, where Fakhar Zaman denied any wrongdoing. The matter has been adjourned, with further proceedings expected.

Under cricket’s laws, specifically Law 41.3.2, players are prohibited from altering the condition of the ball beyond routine polishing. Any violation can result in penalties and further disciplinary action by match officials.

The Pakistan Super League and the Pakistan Cricket Board have yet to issue formal statements on the matter.

The controversy has drawn comparisons to past high-profile ball-tampering incidents in international cricket and is likely to remain under scrutiny as the league continues.
