Poll Shows Record Support for Liberals One Year After Mark Carney Became Prime Minister

Support for Canada’s Liberal Party has reached its highest level in the latest tracking by Nanos Research, marking a major shift in federal politics one year after Mark Carney became prime minister.

The latest survey shows the Liberals at 47.6 per cent support, well ahead of the Conservatives at 31.1 per cent and the NDP at 11.2 per cent.

Pollster Nik Nanos said the current numbers represent the strongest level of support the Liberals have ever reached in the firm’s tracking.

He noted that the last time any party reached about 47 per cent support in the survey was when the Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, were polling at similar levels in early 2025.

At that time, the Conservatives held a strong lead and appeared positioned to win the next federal election. However, the situation changed dramatically after Carney replaced Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader and prime minister.

According to the polling data, the Liberals have now been leading the Conservatives for several months.

The survey also found that Carney holds a strong advantage when Canadians are asked who they prefer as prime minister. Carney was chosen by 56.5 per cent of respondents, compared with 22 per cent for Poilievre.

Nanos said the dramatic shift from a large Conservative lead to a Liberal one is unusual and reflects how quickly public opinion can change.

He described the drop in Conservative support from about 47 per cent to the low 30s over roughly 16 months as a significant swing in voter sentiment.

The poll also looked at the issues Canadians are most concerned about. Jobs and the economy remain the top priorities, followed closely by relations with the United States and concerns related to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Nanos said that concerns about the United States and Canada–U.S. relations have remained among the top issues for more than a year, highlighting how international politics continues to influence Canadian public opinion.
