Brampton to Temporarily Shut Greenbriar Rec Centre in July and August

City Cites Lower Summer Demand for Temporary Closure of Bramalea Recreation Facility

The City of Brampton has announced that the Greenbriar Recreation Centre will temporarily close for two months this summer as part of a cost-saving measure.

City officials say the recreation centre, located at 1100 Central Park Drive in Bramalea, will be closed throughout July and August due to historically lower usage during the summer months.

The decision was included in the city’s 2026 municipal budget, which identified the temporary shutdown as a way to reduce operating costs.

According to the city, summer demand at the facility has declined in recent years. “Greenbriar Recreation Centre will be closed for July and August, reflecting historically lower summer usage at the facility since 2022,” the city said in a statement.

Despite the closure, residents will still have access to programs normally offered at the centre. All registered activities will be relocated to nearby facilities, including the Balmoral Recreation Centre, Earnscliffe Recreation Centre, and Terry Miller Recreation Centre. Summer camps typically held at Greenbriar will also be moved to nearby locations.

Greenbriar Recreation Centre includes a range of public amenities such as an ice rink, pickleball courts, gymnasium, meeting rooms, tennis courts, ball diamonds, playgrounds and soccer fields.

City officials confirmed that Greenbriar is currently the only recreation centre scheduled for a temporary closure this summer.

The move comes as the city continues to address financial pressures. Over the past year, Brampton council has looked for ways to reduce spending amid declining transit ridership in 2025 and broader economic challenges tied to tariffs imposed by Donald Trump.

In October, Patrick Brown implemented a hiring freeze across municipal departments as part of cost-control efforts. The freeze was later lifted temporarily after the 2026 city budget included funding to expand Brampton’s bylaw enforcement department.

Greenbriar Recreation Centre is expected to resume normal operations in September once the summer closure period ends.
