“It’s About Ease, Not Emotion”: Why Many Indians Abroad Don’t Plan to Return Home

A personal finance expert has ignited an online debate after explaining why many Indians living overseas hesitate to return home, even after accumulating significant savings. In a widely shared post on X, author Swapnil Kommawar said the reluctance has little to do with disliking India and more to do with the everyday realities of life abroad. Recounting a conversation with a friend in Canada, Kommawar wrote that even with savings of ₹5–6 crore, many feel life overseas is simply easier, with clearer rules, better work culture, paid overtime, less corruption, and lower daily stress. While emotional ties to India remain strong, he noted that peace of mind, dignity at work, and dependable systems often outweigh financial considerations. The post drew thousands of reactions, with users echoing concerns about stress, exploitation, corruption, and safety in India, while others added that life abroad also has challenges, such as access to healthcare in countries like Canada. The discussion highlights a growing sentiment among the diaspora that the decision to stay abroad is driven more by quality of life than by money or patriotism.
