Fugitive Wanted for Murder in India Arrested After Attempting to Enter Canada at Peace Bridge

A 22-year-old man wanted for murder in India was arrested by U.S. border authorities after attempting to enter Canada under a false identity at the Peace Bridge crossing between Buffalo, N.Y., and Ontario.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stopped the individual — identified through biometrics as Vishat Kumar — on Sunday after he presented a fake name and birth date while trying to cross into Canada. Kumar was immediately denied entry, and a secondary inspection revealed he was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued by Indian authorities in a homicide investigation.

CBP says Kumar had previously entered the United States illegally last year and later failed to appear for a scheduled asylum interview. After being turned back from the Canadian border, he was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and transferred to a federal detention facility in Batavia, N.Y.

Officials say Kumar will now face removal proceedings that are expected to send him back to India. Because he was already residing in the U.S. unlawfully, his return does not require a formal extradition process under the U.S.–India treaty.

Interpol Red Notices are global alerts used to flag fugitives sought for serious crimes, including murder and armed robbery, though they are not arrest warrants and rely on local authorities for enforcement.

Acting Area Port Director Sharon Swiatek praised the officers involved, calling the arrest an example of effective international cooperation and the critical role of biometric technology in identifying fugitives attempting to evade capture.

Authorities have not released further details about the murder case in India linked to Kumar.
