Festive RIDE Programs Launch Across Ontario as Police Target Impaired Driving Ahead of Holiday Season

DURHAM REGION — Durham Regional Police (DRPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officially kicked off the 2025 Festive RIDE campaign on Friday, joining MADD Durham in support of Project Red Ribbon to combat impaired driving during the busy holiday season.

Over the next six weeks, RIDE teams will be stationed throughout Durham Region to ensure roads remain safe. Last year’s campaign saw 16,227 vehicles stopped, resulting in 105 impaired driving charges—up from 87 charges in 2024, when 12,682 vehicles were checked.

Police Concerned About Repeat Offenders

Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira expressed frustration that impaired driving remains a persistent issue.

“The fact that RIDE remains necessary means some people continue to make the dangerous and selfish choice to drive impaired,”
Chief Peter Moreira

So far in 2025, DRPS officers have laid 629 impaired driving charges, nearly matching last year’s total of 638. Moreira said what is “especially concerning” is that 16% of offenders already have a previous impaired driving charge.

Strategic Enforcement and Community Responsibility

Sgt. Greg Carroll, who leads the DRPS RIDE team, said officers will focus on a strategic, data-driven approach to enforcement.

“Keeping our roadways safe is not something DRPS can do alone. We’re asking everyone to do their part,”
Sgt. Greg Carroll

Carroll urged drivers to plan ahead by:

  • Arranging a designated driver
  • Using Durham Transit
  • Calling a cab or rideshare
  • Ensuring party guests have a sober ride home

He also encouraged the public to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1 and providing vehicle details.

“The call you make could save a life,” Carroll added.

Provincial Support for RIDE Enforcement

Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner highlighted the government’s continued investment in RIDE initiatives.

“Impaired driving puts lives at risk, and our government is committed to doing everything we can to protect Ontario’s families and communities,” he said.
“We are proud to support DRPS through the RIDE Grant Program as they launch this year’s campaign.”

MADD and OPP Issue Holiday Safety Reminders

The OPP Highway Safety Division echoed safety messages on social media, urging motorists to “never drive impaired” and to follow officers’ instructions at RIDE checks.

MADD Durham Region, which launched its annual Project Red Ribbon campaign on October 30, is also reminding residents to take a few minutes to plan safe transportation when consuming alcohol.
