As the cost of living continues to rise, many Canadians are cutting back on travel plans — but a few smart strategies can still make a winter getaway surprisingly affordable. Travel search engine Skyscanner has released new insights and hacks to help Canadians save on flights and accommodations this December.
Hack 1: Book at the Right Time
Timing your booking can significantly reduce airfare costs. Skyscanner data shows that December flights are cheapest when booked well in advance.
For example, travellers flying from Toronto to Lisbon can find the best deals when booking exactly 18 weeks before departure.
Flying out on Dec. 3 or Dec. 10 instead of the busier Dec. 19 or Dec. 23 can also result in major savings.
Hack 2: Cheapest Warm Destinations Under $500
Several warm-weather destinations remain under the $500 round-trip mark this December:
- Toronto → Liberia, Costa Rica: from $378
- Montreal → Nassau, Bahamas: from $446
- Calgary → Belize City, Belize: from $472
These routes offer sunshine and warm climates without straining the wallet.
Hack 3: Save on Hotels — Book Early and Compare Options
While early hotel bookings tend to be cheaper, Skyscanner recommends comparing all types of accommodations, including:
- Self-catering stays
- Apartments
- Boutique guesthouses
“Travellers are becoming more flexible in how they stay,” says Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s travel trends and destinations expert. “By looking beyond traditional hotels, you can uncover stays that offer more space, comfort, and character for less.”
Trending Road Trips for December
Skyscanner also highlighted several destinations where road trips are especially scenic this time of year:
Tasmania, Australia
December marks the beginning of summer, making it ideal for a self-drive loop from Hobart through forests, vineyards, and rugged coastlines — complete with wildflower blooms and ocean air.
Madeira, Portugal
Known as the “Island of Eternal Spring,” Madeira offers mild weather, cliffside drives, waterfalls, botanical gardens, and dramatic mountain views.
Canadian Rockies, Canada
The Banff–Jasper–Lake Louise route transforms into a breathtaking winter landscape, featuring frozen lakes, snow-capped peaks, and the iconic Icefields Parkway.
