Poll Shock: 7 in 10 Ontarians Support Ban on Same-Day Fireworks Sales

A new poll reveals that the majority of Ontarians are on board with tighter fireworks regulations — including the ban on selling fireworks on the same day as major holidays.

According to an INsauga.com survey, 70.3 per cent of nearly 9,000 respondents said cities should not allow the public sale of fireworks on the day of a holiday. Only 29.7 per cent voted in favour of allowing same-day sales.

The debate comes as Mississauga City Council moves to enforce stricter fireworks rules following complaints about unruly gatherings and late-night disturbances during festive events. The city’s amended bylaw will soon prohibit the sale of fireworks on holidays such as Diwali, New Year’s Eve, Canada Day, Victoria Day, and Lunar New Year — the five days each year when residents are otherwise permitted to light fireworks on private property without a permit.

Previously, vendors were allowed to sell consumer fireworks in the 10 days leading up to and including the holiday. But after several chaotic incidents at locations like Westwood Square in Malton and Ridgeway Plaza in west Erin Mills, city officials voted in October to end “day-of” sales altogether.

Some residents have voiced frustration, arguing that many families only have time to buy fireworks on the holiday itself for small backyard celebrations. Nonetheless, the strong poll results indicate that most Ontarians side with the city’s efforts to prioritize safety, noise control, and public order over convenience.

Mississauga’s updated bylaw, expected to take effect soon, marks another step in tightening regulations that were first strengthened in late 2023. The city also plans more public education campaigns to remind residents about the rules and encourage responsible celebrations.
