‘Absolutely Heartbroken for the Blue Jays’: U.S. Media Praise Toronto After Epic World Series Heartbreaker

It was a finish for the ages — and though the Toronto Blue Jays fell just short of their World Series dream, American sportswriters are calling Game 7 against the Los Angeles Dodgers one of the greatest finales in baseball history.

At the Rogers Centre on Saturday night, the Jays led deep into the ninth inning before heartbreak struck. With just two outs remaining, Miguel Rojas launched a game-tying home run, forcing extra innings. Then, Dodgers catcher Will Smith sealed the win with a solo shot in the 11th, lifting Los Angeles to a 5–4 victory and its latest championship.

The loss ended a Cinderella run for the Blue Jays, who hadn’t reached the World Series since 1993 and had stunned critics throughout the postseason. Yet despite the outcome, U.S. outlets lauded the team’s grit, talent, and the unforgettable atmosphere that enveloped Toronto’s downtown ballpark.

The Los Angeles Times declared the Dodgers’ comeback “a march toward destiny” and called the finale “one of the greatest games this sport has ever seen.” Columnist Jack Harris wrote, “For ages, this game will be remembered. As long as baseball is played, a script like this will never be replicated.”

On Fox Sports, analysts Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz offered heartfelt praise for the Jays’ courage and consistency. “Absolutely heartbroken for the Blue Jays,” Rodriguez said on air. “They had an incredible year from top to bottom… they pitched well, defended well, showed guts, and never gave up.” Ortiz added that the clash between the Dodgers and Jays was “a World Series to remember.”

The Wall Street Journal’s Jared Diamond wrote that while the Dodgers fulfilled expectations as baseball’s most star-studded team, the Blue Jays refused to be supporting characters in their story. “They outlasted the relentlessly spirited Blue Jays in one of the most thrilling fall classics in recent memory,” he wrote, calling it “perhaps the greatest Game 7 ever played.”

Diamond also credited Toronto’s emerging stars, noting that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. cemented his place among baseball’s elite, while Ernie Clement and Addison Barger became household names. “All that stood between the Blue Jays and immortality,” he wrote, “was one more win in front of a delirious fan base desperate for a championship after 32 years.”

Meanwhile, CNN summed up the contest simply as “an unreal finale,” saying the extra-innings duel between Shohei Ohtani and Max Scherzer was everything baseball fans could have hoped for — and more.

For Toronto fans, the pain is still fresh. But as the dust settles, one thing is certain: the 2025 Blue Jays didn’t just make a run — they made history, capturing hearts on both sides of the border.
