Southern Ontario — Three teenagers from Hamilton are facing multiple charges after police uncovered an organized auto theft ring responsible for stealing approximately 50 vehicles across Niagara and the Greater Toronto Area.
The investigation, led by Niagara Regional Police, began on April 20 when a 2024 Lincoln was reported stolen in Niagara. The vehicle was later recovered, leading to the discovery of a sophisticated operation involving the use of electronic tracking devices to target mainly Lexus and Toyota vehicles in residential neighborhoods.
Police allege the stolen vehicles were first transported to Hamilton, where factory-installed tracking systems were disabled. The vehicles were then loaded onto transport trucks and moved to Montreal, from where they were shipped in containers to a major seaport in Iraq.
On May 29, Niagara police executed five search warrants in the Hamilton area. The operation resulted in the seizure of 20 stolen vehicles, $53,000 in cash, an airsoft pistol, and other related items.
Three suspects were arrested and charged:
- Abdulhamid Talip, 18, faces two counts of motor vehicle theft and two counts of possessing a device intended for vehicle theft.
- A 17-year-old male is charged with two counts of possessing a theft device.
- Another 17-year-old male faces two counts of motor vehicle theft, two counts of possession of a theft device, and one count of breaching a release order.
Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identities of the two minors cannot be disclosed.
All three suspects were remanded in custody for a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on May 30.
“This investigation highlights the reach and sophistication of organized crime networks operating in our Region, the Province of Ontario, and beyond,” said Niagara Regional Police Chief Bill Fordy.
The investigation was supported by the Ontario Provincial Police, Hamilton Police, Halton Regional Police, Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, and the Canada Border Services Agency.
“Hamilton Police continue to work collaboratively with our policing partners to address the rise in auto theft,” added acting Chief Ryan Diodati. “These focused, coordinated efforts are making a significant impact in disrupting and dismantling these organized networks.”
Further charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.
