Panthers Pounce: Leafs Crushed 6–1, Face Elimination in Game 6

The Florida Panthers delivered a stunning 6–1 blow to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday night, seizing a 3–2 series lead and pushing the Leafs to the brink of elimination in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The defending champions dominated from puck drop, with goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky stopping 31 of 32 shots and extending his shutout streak to over 143 minutes before it was snapped late in the third period. Toronto, once in control of the series with a 2–0 lead, now finds itself on the ropes after dropping three straight games.

Jesper Boqvist stepped up with a goal and an assist in his return to the lineup, while Aaron Ekblad, Dmitry Kulikov, Niko Mikkola, A.J. Greer, and Sam Bennett all found the scoresheet for Florida. Sam Reinhart and Nate Schmidt contributed with two assists each, adding to Toronto’s defensive woes.

Toronto’s goaltending faltered under pressure. Joseph Woll was pulled after allowing five goals on 25 shots, while Matt Murray came in as relief for his first playoff appearance since 2020. Nick Robertson scored the lone consolation goal for the Leafs with just over a minute remaining in regulation.

Fans voiced their frustration, with some leaving early and one even throwing an Auston Matthews jersey onto the ice — a symbol of the disappointment echoing through the arena.

Leafs head coach Craig Berube sent a clear message by benching his stars to open the third period, hoping to spark energy from the fourth line. But the effort came too little, too late, with another underwhelming power play and missed chances reinforcing the night’s collapse.

Game 6 is set for Friday night at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, where the Panthers will look to close out the series. If necessary, Game 7 would return to Toronto on Sunday.

Injury Watch & Lineup Notes:

  • Leafs added David Kämpf and Nick Robertson, while scratching Calle Järnkrok and Pontus Holmberg.
  • Panthers’ Jesper Boqvist replaced injured Evan Rodrigues and capitalized with a key performance.
  • Aleksander Barkov addressed the Game 4 hit by Max Domi with humor, saying, “I didn’t see it… it’s playoff hockey.”

The Leafs, facing injuries, inconsistency, and a surging Florida squad, now have one more chance to stay alive. Friday will test not only their playoff hopes but their ability to respond under pressure.
