Historic Day for Brampton: Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Launch of New Peel Memorial Hospital

Brampton celebrated a historic milestone with the official groundbreaking ceremony for the city’s much-anticipated second hospital at the Peel Memorial site. This significant development promises to expand essential health care services for Brampton’s rapidly growing community and coincides perfectly with the 100th anniversary of Peel Memorial Hospital, honoring a century of dedicated community care.

“After years of tireless advocacy and collaboration with William Osler Health System and the Government of Ontario, today we proudly broke ground on Brampton’s much-needed second hospital,” said Regional Councillor Rowena Santos (Wards 1 & 5), Chair of Community Services. “For decades, Brampton’s health care has been severely underfunded, relying on a single hospital to serve over 800,000 residents, with our population increasing by 45,000 annually. While today marks significant progress, we remain dedicated to pushing forward for even more investments—including planning for a third hospital—to fully meet our city’s evolving health care needs.”

Mayor Patrick Brown emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “Today’s groundbreaking represents a turning point for our city. It’s a testament to the relentless advocacy and unity of our community in demanding better health care. Brampton deserves world-class facilities, and today we move closer to making that a reality.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also expressed his strong support: “Our government is committed to delivering top-quality health care for the people of Brampton. The new Peel Memorial Hospital will significantly enhance health services in the region, addressing decades of underfunding and ensuring residents receive the care they deserve.”

The Province of Ontario has committed a landmark $2.3 billion toward the Peel Memorial Hospital project, ensuring that Brampton’s health care infrastructure aligns with current and future demands. This monumental development is made possible through the vision and leadership of William Osler Health System and its Foundation.

In line with this commitment, Brampton’s 2025 Budget has prioritized substantial investments in health care, dedicating $10 million to the TMU School of Medicine to boost medical education and innovation. The City has also set aside $81.1 million in reserves and $4.9 million from levies to support the Peel Memorial transformation, underscoring its determination to provide accessible, quality health care for all residents.

Community engagement continues to be pivotal in advancing health care initiatives in Brampton. Last year’s Hockey Night in Brampton, hosted by Mayor Patrick Brown, raised a record-breaking $14 million for the William Osler Health System Foundation, illustrating Brampton’s strong community spirit and generosity. The upcoming event is scheduled for August 20, 2025, promising continued community support and involvement.

The City of Brampton remains steadfast in its commitment to partnering with all levels of government, industry stakeholders, and residents to enhance local health care. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony is a significant first step toward a brighter and healthier future for Brampton.
