Three high school students from Mississauga have been elected to serve as student trustees on the Peel District School Board (PDSB) for the 2025–26 school year, giving them the opportunity to represent the voices of over 148,000 students across Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon.
The student trustees were officially confirmed at a recent board meeting following a vote conducted among students in the school system. Their one-year terms will begin in August 2025.
Student trustees serve a vital role in shaping education in Peel. They attend board meetings, contribute to discussions on student-related policies, and ensure the concerns and perspectives of their peers are heard at the highest levels.
This year’s elected student trustees are:
- Amenah Gangat from Lincoln M. Alexander Secondary School, representing students from schools north of Highway 401.
- Julia Zhu from Clarkson Secondary School, representing students from schools south of Highway 401.
- Indica Simms Johnny from Rick Hansen Secondary School, who was elected as the Indigenous Student Trustee.
The three were chosen from a pool of 30 student candidates.
This marks the second year that students have elected an Indigenous student trustee—a position open to self-identifying First Nations, Métis, or Inuit students who are nominated and voted in by peers from the same community.
With their election, Gangat, Zhu, and Simms Johnny will work to amplify student voices, keep peers informed about decisions that affect them, and help shape a more inclusive and responsive school environment across Peel.
