A scathing Reddit post titled “I Regret Moving to Canada” has taken the internet by storm, igniting a fiery debate about the challenges Indian students face when pursuing a better life abroad. The anonymous poster, an Indian student living in Canada, paints a grim picture of exploitation, financial struggle, and emotional isolation, warning others that the Western dream often turns into a nightmare.
The student accuses the Canadian government and colleges of treating international students as part of a profit-driven “business model.” They claim many students enroll in low-tier or private institutions that charge sky-high tuition fees while delivering poor-quality education. “Professors barely put in effort, the curriculum is outdated, and the degree is nearly useless in the job market,” the Redditor wrote, adding that employers often dismiss these qualifications. The student singled out Bow Valley College in Calgary, branding it “the worst school” and cautioning that without “Canadian experience,” graduates are forced into low-paying “survival jobs” like driving for Uber, working in warehouses, or staffing retail stores just to make ends meet.
The financial burden of living in Canada was another major shock for the student. They described the soaring costs of rent, groceries, and essentials, which far exceed what many newcomers anticipate. “Most students end up working long hours at minimum-wage jobs just to survive. Work-life balance doesn’t exist—you either work or you don’t eat,” the post stated. The Redditor also alleged widespread exploitation by employers, who pay international students illegally low wages, knowing they can be easily replaced by other desperate students, trapping them in a vicious cycle of poverty.
Beyond finances, the emotional toll of life abroad weighed heavily on the student. “Canadians are polite but distant, and real friendships are rare,” they wrote, describing how loneliness and depression often take hold, leaving many to suffer in silence. Urging aspiring migrants to rethink their plans, the Redditor argued that India offers better prospects. “The West sells you an illusion, but once you get here, you realize you’ve been brainwashed. Stay in India, invest in yourself, and build something meaningful at home,” they advised.
The post has sparked a heated online debate, with some echoing the student’s frustrations while others defend the opportunities Canada provides. One commenter shared, “West is cool when you have a job, go on a work visa and a company is paying you a salary. It’s not cool when you have lakhs of debt and living on peanuts working labour jobs, in short not cool for poor ppl.” Another pushed back, saying, “I moved to Canada in 2022 and it’s awesome here. If you followed others like sheep and went to a random college in Ontario to do a stupid course, it’s your fault buddy.” A third user pointed to mismatched expectations, noting, “People never understand the difference between a happy life & a comfortable life. You can’t have both.”
The viral post has brought renewed attention to the struggles of international students, raising questions about the systemic challenges they face and the promises of a better life abroad.
