Who Will Be the Next Pope? Spotlight on Global Contenders in an Unpredictable Race

With the passing of Pope Francis, the Catholic Church is preparing for one of its most consequential transitions in modern history. The decision lies in the hands of the College of Cardinals, who will soon gather in the Sistine Chapel for a conclave that could shift the global Church’s tone and trajectory.

For the first time, fewer than half of the voting cardinals are European, opening the door to a leader from Africa, Asia, or the Americas. Despite Pope Francis having appointed most of the cardinals, ideological unity is far from guaranteed, making the race wide open.

Top contenders include Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy, seen as a seasoned Vatican diplomat and political insider. From the Philippines, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, often dubbed the “Asian Francis,” brings a pastoral and reform-minded approach. Africa’s frontrunners—Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu of Congo and Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana—symbolize a continent where Catholicism is rapidly growing.

Other prominent names include Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Germany, known for his progressive stances, Cardinal Robert Prevost of the U.S., and Cardinal Peter Erdo of Hungary, a compromise conservative. Meanwhile, Canadian Cardinals Marc Ouellet and Michael Czerny represent the Church’s intellectual and humanitarian wings.

As speculation intensifies, one thing is clear: this conclave may mark a historic pivot—towards the Global South, towards reform, or perhaps a reaffirmation of traditional values. The world watches and waits for the next chapter in the Vatican’s storied history.
