India Mourns: 26 Civilians Killed in Kashmir Terror Attack, National Response Underway

India is in mourning following one of the most devastating terror attacks in recent memory. Twenty-six civilians were killed in a brutal ambush by militants in the scenic meadow of Baisaran, near Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir. The victims, mostly tourists, were targeted in a remote area accessible only by foot or pony.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the attack a “heinous act” and pledged that justice would be swift and uncompromising. He reiterated that the “evil agenda of terrorism will never succeed,” and has directed Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take immediate charge of the situation. Shah arrived in Srinagar the same day and is expected to lead a high-level security review.

Heartbreaking testimonies from survivors have emerged, painting a picture of terror and helplessness. One survivor, Pallavi Rao from Karnataka, witnessed her husband’s murder at the hands of the terrorists, who chillingly told her to live and deliver a message to the Prime Minister.

National leaders responded with unified condemnation. President Droupadi Murmu labeled the act “unpardonable,” while Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar joined voices across party lines to express outrage and sympathy. Internationally, Israel’s Foreign Minister also condemned the attack and reaffirmed solidarity with India in the fight against terrorism.

The Indian Army and Anantnag Police have launched a massive search operation. Northern Army Commander Lt Gen MV Suchendra Kumar is overseeing the response on the ground, as reinforcements are deployed across the region. A public helpline has been issued to aid families of the victims and locate missing persons.

This tragedy has reignited urgent national discussions on internal security, the safety of tourism in conflict zones, and the need for strengthened counter-terrorism efforts. As India stands united in grief, the resolve to defeat terrorism remains stronger than ever.
