Deportation for Trucker Responsible for Humboldt Broncos Crash

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the truck driver responsible for the fatal Humboldt Broncos bus crash, has been ordered to be deported to India. The Immigration and Refugee Board issued the decision during a virtual hearing on Friday.

Trent Cook of the Immigration Division stated, “I am required by law to issue you with a deportation order,” citing Sidhu’s inadmissibility due to serious criminality.

Sidhu, who arrived in Canada in 2014, caused the crash in 2018 by running a stop sign and colliding with the hockey team’s bus, resulting in 16 deaths and 13 injuries. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was sentenced to eight years in prison, receiving full parole last year.

Sidhu’s lawyer, Michael Greene, plans to file for his permanent resident status on humanitarian grounds, noting Sidhu’s remorse and the medical needs of his Canadian-born child. Several families of the victims have called for Sidhu’s deportation, while some, like Scott Thomas, advocate for his stay.
