Costco Expands Ontario Footprint with Five New Warehouses Planned Across Growing Communities

Costco is undertaking one of its largest expansion initiatives in Ontario in recent years, with five new warehouse locations either under construction or in the advanced stages of municipal approvals. The new stores are planned for Windsor, Oakville, Halton Hills, Caledon and Wasaga Beach, reflecting the retailer’s continued investment in some of the province’s fastest-growing communities.

Although Costco traditionally does not officially announce new warehouse locations until approximately three months before opening, municipal planning approvals, construction activity and statements from local officials have confirmed that the projects are steadily moving forward.

The most advanced development is located in East Windsor, where construction has already begun on a modern 158,000-square-foot warehouse. The new facility will feature a gas bar, tire centre, seasonal garden centre and nearly 1,000 parking spaces, providing residents with a full-service Costco shopping experience.

In Halton Region, the long-anticipated Costco serving Milton residents is finally becoming a reality. While the warehouse will officially be located in Halton Hills at the intersection of Regional Road 25 and 5 Sideroad, it is expected to primarily serve the rapidly growing Town of Milton, where residents have been requesting a nearby Costco for several years.

Halton Hills Council recently approved the development following presentations by the Rice Group, the project’s developer. Construction could begin as early as this summer, with the warehouse expected to open in the fall of 2027.

Michael Rice, Chief Executive Officer of Rice Group, described the project as a significant economic opportunity for the municipality, noting that membership warehouse stores generate quality employment opportunities and are highly valued by local residents. He later confirmed Costco as the retail tenant, ending years of speculation and generating widespread excitement among Milton-area residents.

Oakville is also preparing to welcome a new Costco warehouse. The facility will be constructed on Wyecroft Road near Burloak Drive and the Queen Elizabeth Way. Following final site plan approval, demolition work has commenced, with construction expected to continue toward a planned fall 2027 opening. The development will include more than 1,000 parking spaces, including underground parking, along with a Costco gas station.

Further north, Wasaga Beach is witnessing one of the largest private-sector investments in the town’s history. Construction recently began on a $50-million Costco warehouse at 345 Lyons Court. The 162,000-square-foot facility is expected to create more than 370 permanent jobs and is scheduled to open in November.

Mayor Brian Smith welcomed the investment, describing it as a major milestone for the community that will strengthen the local economy, create employment opportunities and contribute to a more sustainable municipal tax base. The project also supports the town’s broader strategy of attracting year-round commercial investment and economic development.

Meanwhile, another long-awaited Costco warehouse is moving closer to becoming a reality in Caledon. The proposed development at the intersection of Creditview Road and Mayfield Road, immediately north of Brampton, recently received support from the Town’s Planning Committee, marking a significant milestone in the approval process.

The proposed 36-acre commercial development will feature a 167,000-square-foot Costco warehouse, a gas station, grocery store, restaurants and additional retail space. Once completed, the location is expected to serve residents of northwest Brampton, Caledon, Halton Hills, Milton and surrounding communities, many of whom currently travel considerable distances to shop at existing Costco locations.

The Caledon proposal represents the second effort to establish a Costco at the site after an earlier application was rejected in 2022 because of infrastructure concerns. With key planning issues now addressed, the project has regained momentum.

Collectively, the five new warehouse developments demonstrate Costco’s continued confidence in Ontario’s rapidly expanding communities and their long-term economic growth. While official opening dates vary by location, thousands of Ontario residents can now look forward to improved access to one of Canada’s most popular membership retailers as these major developments move closer to completion.
