City of Brampton Launches New Youth Cricket League to Promote Active Living

The City of Brampton today announced the launch of its first-ever Youth Cricket League, set to begin on July 2, 2024. This new initiative, part of the Brampton Sports League, aims to engage youth aged 6 to 15 in the exciting sport of cricket, promoting healthy lifestyles and active participation in sports.

Aligned with the format of the Global T20 (GT20) Canada, a prestigious cricket tournament hosted annually in Brampton, the league will feature six teams in each age category. Each team will consist of 15 players drawn from GT20 youth academy trainees and local residents. The league will span nine weeks during the summer, with registration now open for interested participants.

In support of this initiative and to further enhance access to cricket in Brampton, the city is constructing two new cricket fields and pitches at Blue Oak Park and County Court Park. These are part of a broader $8 million investment outlined in the 2024 Budget aimed at expanding Brampton’s cricket infrastructure.

Mayor Patrick Brown, alongside Regional Councillors Rowena Santos and Gurpartap Singh Toor, celebrated the ongoing construction of the new cricket facilities. “As the cricket capital of Canada, and arguably North America, Brampton is dedicated to expanding access to cricket and enhancing our vibrant sports culture,” stated Mayor Brown. “The new Youth Cricket League will provide a platform for young individuals to develop their cricket skills, engage in healthy competition, and foster a lifelong love for the sport.”

Councillor Santos added, “Cricket holds a special place in the hearts of Brampton residents. This league is not just about sports development but also about strengthening community ties and promoting active lifestyles among our youth.”

The league is expected to make a significant impact on the community, providing young players with the opportunity to learn and grow in a sport that enjoys tremendous popularity and support in the city.
