City of Brampton Boosts Community Safety with Enhanced By-Law Enforcement and New Investments

New Report Outlines Steps to Enhance Efficiency and Compliance

In a recent press conference, Mayor Patrick Brown unveiled a strategic plan to implement 28 recommendations from the Enforcement Operational Review. This review, aimed at boosting the efficiency and effectiveness of the City’s by-law operations, was approved by the City Council on June 3.

“Brampton is a beautiful city, and maintaining community standards is a top priority for Council. Respecting our neighbours fosters an environment where all residents feel a deeper sense of pride in our city and helps ensure property values remain high. The vast majority of Brampton residents understand their responsibilities and conduct themselves accordingly. However, for those who do not follow the rules, we are intensifying our efforts to educate, encourage, and enforce when necessary. Our enforcement teams are diligently and professionally responding to a wide range of complaints and conducting thorough investigations. Today’s announcement underscores our proactive steps and strong commitment to a clean, safe and prosperous city.” Patrick Brown, Mayor, City of Brampton

As a first step, the City will adopt a Stabilization Staffing Model, which involves hiring 38 additional By-law Enforcement Officers and two support positions. This investment will also expand the Enforcement and By-law Division’s fleet and equipment. These enhancements are designed to ensure the effective implementation of the recommendations while improving the division’s ability to address community issues such as parking and property standards. Additionally, City Staff will streamline processes and explore technological solutions to maintain compliance with local by-laws, contributing to a safer community.

The City of Brampton will continue to prioritize its service request system, focusing on calls with the most significant impact on community safety. High-priority requests include fireworks, failure to remove snow, and excessively loud music, which pose public health risks and nuisance issues.

“Our community has voiced concerns and we have listened. The implementation of the Stabilization Staffing Model is a pivotal step in strengthening our enforcement operations. We are ensuring our officers have the tools and resources they need to meet the needs of our growing city more effectively. We are committed to making Brampton a place where everyone feels safe, heard and supported.”

As Brampton grows, the City remains committed to regularly reviewing its by-laws and enforcement measures to reflect the evolving needs and values of the community. The progress of these initiatives will be closely monitored, with adjustments made as necessary to ensure successful implementation. City Staff will report to Council on the progress, with the first update expected in the fall of 2024.
