Brampton Celebrates 100 Black Community Leaders at Annual Event

On February 1st, 2024, the City of Brampton kicked off Black History Month by honoring 100 Black Community Builders and Champions who have significantly contributed to the city’s dynamism and productivity. This recognition event spotlighted individuals whose efforts have fostered community growth and resilience.

Among the honorees was Vida Gardener, Principal of Fletcher’s Creek Senior Public School. Born in Jamaica, Gardener’s educational and professional journey spanned from her initial teaching roles in Jamaica to her current leadership position in Canada. She has worked with the York Region District School Board and the Toronto District School Board before her current role with the Peel District School Board.

Gardener’s dedication to education is evident in her collaborations with organizations like Penny Appeal, The City of Brampton, and Sheridan College, aiming to create supportive environments for students and their families. Her philosophy of service is encapsulated in her belief in “planting trees under which she does not expect to sit,” reflecting her commitment to future generations.
