Thousands are expected to gather in Malton this weekend for one of the region’s largest cultural celebrations, as the annual Khalsa Day (Nagar Kirtan) Parade returns on Sunday, May 3—bringing with it significant traffic disruptions and transit changes.
The City of Mississauga is advising residents and visitors to plan ahead, as the parade will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. along a 10-kilometre route with multiple stopovers. The event marks Vaisakhi—a major celebration commemorating the birth of the Sikh faith and the Sikh New Year.
The procession will begin at Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara and conclude at Sikh Spiritual Centre Toronto, passing through key Malton corridors including Morningstar Drive, Darcel Avenue, Finch Avenue, Woodbine Downs Boulevard, and Carrier Drive. Organizers note that this year’s route includes an updated turn along Darcel Avenue.
Major road closures will be in effect throughout the day, with some starting as early as 10 a.m. and lasting into the early evening. Key closures include sections of Airport Road, Morningstar Drive, Goreway Drive, Darcel Avenue, and Finch Avenue. Roads will reopen gradually as the parade moves forward.
Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes such as Derry Road, Rexdale Boulevard, Belfield Road, Dixie Road, Weston Road, and Highway 427 to avoid delays. Authorities are also urging motorists to follow directions from on-site police and traffic personnel and to park only in designated areas.
Transit users should be aware that several MiWay routes—including 7 Airport, 11 Westwood, 16A Malton, 22 Finch, 42 Derry, and 107 Malton Express—will be temporarily detoured. Riders may need to walk to temporary stops outside the closure zones, and are advised to check real-time updates before and during their سفر.
Despite the disruptions, the event promises a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and faith, drawing participants from across the Greater Toronto Area.
Residents are encouraged to plan their travel in advance, allow extra time, and consider walking, cycling, or using transit where possible.
With large crowds expected, officials are also reminding the public to keep emergency routes clear and to call 911 in case of any urgent situation.
As Malton prepares to host this colourful and meaningful event, the message is clear: plan ahead, stay safe, and enjoy one of the region’s most cherished community celebrations.
