Brampton Teen Athlete Earns International Recognition with Double Medal Triumph in Chicago

Brampton’s rising sports talent is once again making the city proud after young Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor Gia Pedroso delivered an outstanding performance at the prestigious Chicago Spring International Open IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2026 held this past weekend in Chicago. Official tournament results confirmed Gia captured a Gold medal in her division and followed it with a Silver medal in the highly competitive absolute category, where top athletes from multiple weight classes compete against one another.

Competing on the international stage requires more than physical ability. It demands discipline, mental strength, consistency, and the confidence to perform under pressure. Gia demonstrated all of those qualities throughout the event, showcasing the dedication and work ethic that continue to define her journey in the sport.

Her latest success adds to an already impressive resume. Last summer, Gia also secured Gold at one of the world’s largest and most respected youth jiu jitsu tournaments, further establishing herself as one of Brampton’s most promising young martial artists. Her continued progress reflects countless hours of training, commitment, and determination.

Gia was not the only athlete carrying Brampton’s flag with pride. Another student from Brampton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also earned Gold at the same international competition, underlining the strength of the local training program and the growing presence of Brampton athletes on the global stage.

Speaking after her latest success, Gia said, “I am very proud and grateful for this result. Every competition teaches me something new, and I want to keep improving, working hard, and representing Brampton with pride wherever I compete.”

Paul Vicente praised the young athlete’s achievement, stating, “Gia Sanfilippo’s success on the international stage is an inspiration to young people across Brampton. Her dedication, discipline, and determination show what can be achieved through hard work. Our community is proud of her accomplishments and excited for what lies ahead.”

The achievements of these young competitors are a proud moment for the city and an inspiration for youth across the community. They demonstrate that with the right guidance, perseverance, and passion, local talent can compete — and succeed — anywhere in the world.

As Gia continues to train, compete, and grow, her journey is only just beginning. Brampton will undoubtedly be watching with pride as one of its young stars continues to rise.
