Police Lay Nearly 400 Charges for Illegal Window Tint and Obstructed Plates in Caledon Blitz

Police north of Brampton have laid hundreds of charges during a four-day traffic enforcement blitz targeting illegal window tint and improper licence plates, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

The Caledon OPP says officers conducted focused patrols on local roads over the weekend, resulting in a total of 586 charges. Of those, 399 were specifically related to window tint violations and licence plate offences.

Authorities launched the enforcement initiative to address vehicle modifications and plate obstructions that can limit visibility and hinder identification, particularly in traffic enforcement and public safety investigations.

Ontario law prohibits any coating or covering on passenger windows beside the driver that blocks more than 70 per cent of light. After-market tint is also not permitted on front windshields. Drivers found with obstructed windows can face fines starting at $110 or more.

Police also emphasized the importance of keeping licence plates clearly visible. Plates must remain clean, unobstructed, and mounted in a way that ensures the full plate and numbers can be seen at all times. Obstructions caused by dirt, spare tires, bumper bars, or other vehicle parts may result in charges.

The OPP is reminding motorists that compliance with window tinting and licence plate regulations is mandatory, and enforcement will continue to ensure safer roads across the region.
