Canada Issues New Travel Advisories for Spring Getaways: Pirate Attacks, Protests, and Crime Among Key Risks

Spring travel may be more affordable and less crowded than the summer rush, but Canadians are being urged to stay alert as the federal government issues updated travel advisories for several international destinations — including warnings about pirate attacks, protests, and rising crime.

Global Affairs Canada has updated its Travel Advice and Advisories page, warning travellers of political unrest, terrorism threats, and maritime piracy in several countries.

Here are five destinations flagged in the latest update:

Colombia

Risks: Nationwide strikes, high crime, and targeted attacks on foreigners.
Key Concerns:

  • Protests related to a national referendum (May 28–29) could cause roadblocks and transit delays.
  • A surge in incidents involving dating app scams has resulted in druggings, robberies, kidnappings, and even deaths. Victims are often lured, drugged with scopolamine, and attacked.

Mexico

Risks: Organized crime, kidnappings, and political unrest.
Key Concerns:

  • Judicial elections on June 1 may lead to nationwide demonstrations, especially in Mexico City.
  • Armed clashes between drug cartels and security forces can erupt unexpectedly.
  • Protests could disrupt transit and public safety in major urban centres.

Egypt

Risks: Terrorism and regional instability.
Key Concerns:

  • Ongoing Middle East tensions could lead to airspace closures and military debris hazards.
  • Indiscriminate terrorist attacks remain a significant concern, particularly in Cairo and on sensitive national dates (e.g., July 3 and August 14).

Indonesia

Risks: Terrorism, civil unrest, and piracy.
Key Concerns:

  • Active terrorist cells continue to operate despite counterterrorism efforts.
  • Violent incidents are frequent in Papua, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, and other regions.
  • Pirate attacks are reported in the Strait of Malacca and waters north of Sulawesi and Kalimantan. Mariners should use extreme caution.

Vietnam

Risks: Petty theft and visa issues.
Key Concerns:

  • Pickpocketing and bag snatching are common in major cities, especially during festivals like Tet (Lunar New Year).
  • Always double-check your visa details. Errors can lead to denied boarding or entry.

Travel Tip from the Government of Canada:

If you’re applying for a visa, ensure the name, date of birth, and order of personal details match your passport exactly. Mistakes can result in costly delays or travel denials.
