Veteran Actor Satish Shah, Beloved ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ Star, Passes Away at 74

The Indian film and television industry is mourning the loss of Satish Shah, the veteran actor best known for his unforgettable comic roles and impeccable timing, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 74 due to kidney failure.

The news was confirmed by Cine and TV Artistes Association (CINTAA) official Ashoke Pandit, who shared the heartbreaking update on Instagram. “It is with deep sorrow that I inform you that our dear friend and a remarkable actor, Satish Shah, passed away a few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja Hospital, where he breathed his last. A tremendous loss to the industry. Om Shanti,” Pandit wrote.

A Kutchi Gujarati from Mandvi, Shah pursued his education at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, before graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Over a five-decade career, he became one of India’s most admired character actors, celebrated for bringing warmth and wit to every role.

Shah’s versatility shone across both television and cinema. He became a household name with his hilarious portrayal of Indravadan Sarabhai in the cult-classic sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, a role that remains one of the most iconic in Indian TV history. His earlier work in Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984), where he famously played 55 different characters in 55 episodes, showcased his extraordinary range and talent.

In Bollywood, Shah’s performances in comedies such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Main Hoon Na (2004), Fanaa (2006), and Om Shanti Om (2007) cemented his reputation as a master of humor and expression.

Beyond acting, he served the industry in multiple capacities — co-judging Comedy Circus alongside Archana Puran Singh in 2008, and later being appointed as a member of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Society in 2015.

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world, remembering Shah not only for his craft but also for his warmth, humility, and unwavering passion for storytelling.

With his passing, Indian cinema loses one of its most enduring talents — an actor whose laughter, charm, and humanity will continue to live on through generations of fans.
