Vehicle Thefts Drop in Peel Region, but 6,657 Cars Stolen in 2024 Highlight Persistent Risks

Mississauga and Brampton continue to grapple with widespread vehicle thefts, with Peel Regional Police reporting 6,657 stolen vehicles as of December 7, 2024. This represents a notable decrease compared to the 7,637 thefts reported during the same period in 2023.

From January to December, 3,456 thefts were reported in Mississauga and 3,185 in Brampton, with hotspots including areas like Airport Road, Dixie Road, and Hurontario Street. Vehicle thefts peaked between mid-August and mid-September, with 703 incidents, while early summer recorded the lowest monthly numbers at 583 thefts.

Despite the decline, only 193 cases have been resolved, while over 5,000 remain under investigation. Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah attributed the progress to focused policing efforts but emphasized the need for stronger collaboration with government and industry leaders. “While we see positive results, systemic solutions are essential to tackle vulnerabilities contributing to auto theft,” he stated at this year’s Peel Police Auto Theft Summit.

To combat theft, police recommend measures like parking vehicles in locked garages, using steering wheel locks, and installing video surveillance systems. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, particularly in high-risk areas.

The most targeted vehicles in Ontario include models like the Lexus RX, Toyota Highlander, and Dodge Ram 1500, according to Équité Association’s annual report.

As efforts to curb vehicle thefts intensify, Peel police and community leaders encourage residents to take proactive steps to protect their vehicles and report suspicious activity promptly.
