Brampton, ON – The Ontario Liberal Caucus hosted a warm and culturally rich evening social in celebration of Vaisakhi on Wednesday, April 29, at the Jim Archdekin Auditorium in Brampton. The event brought together over 100 residents from the Indo-Canadian community—particularly the Punjabi community—alongside political leaders, community advocates, and representatives from various social, seniors, sports, and religious organizations.
Prominent community organizations including the Flower City Friends Club, Association of Seniors, PSB Seniors Club, Indo Canadian Golf Association, and Brampton Social Group actively participated, reflecting the deep-rooted spirit of unity, diversity, and cultural pride within the region.
Among the distinguished guests and community leaders in attendance were Paramjit Birdi, Parm Sidhu, Balwinder Bains, Hardam Mangat, Sikhwant Thethi, Pankaj Sandhu, Jangir Sehmbi, Gian Paul, Ram Singh Daind, Paramjit Johal, and Safdar Hussain, whose presence further highlighted the strong engagement and representation from across the community.

The evening commenced with a heartfelt welcome address by MPP Jonathan Tsao, who greeted attendees and highlighted the importance of Vaisakhi as both a harvest festival and a significant day marking the birth of the Khalsa in Sikh history.
“Vaisakhi is a celebration of resilience, faith, and community spirit. It is a privilege to welcome everyone here tonight as we honour the rich heritage and invaluable contributions of the Sikh and Punjabi communities in Ontario,” said Jonathan Tsao, MPP. “Your presence here strengthens the bonds that make our communities vibrant and inclusive.”
The keynote address was delivered by Interim Leader MPP John Fraser, who spoke passionately about the significance of Vaisakhi, Khalsa Day, and Sikh heritage. He emphasized the values of equality, service, and courage that the Sikh faith represents and connected those principles with the broader vision of Ontario.
“Vaisakhi is not only a celebration of faith but a reminder of the enduring values of justice, equality, and service to humanity,” said John Fraser. “These values resonate deeply with the principles we strive for in Ontario. Together, by embracing diversity and working collectively, we can continue building a province that stands as a model of inclusivity and opportunity for all.”
The evening was further enriched by energetic Bhangra performances, adding color and vibrancy to the celebration, along with a delightful spread of traditional and contemporary cuisine enjoyed by all attendees. The event also served as a meaningful platform for networking, reconnecting with old friends, and strengthening community ties.
Long-time Liberal supporter Amin Dhillon expressed his appreciation for the gathering:
“Events like this truly reflect the strength of our multicultural fabric. It’s inspiring to see leaders and communities come together to celebrate heritage while building a shared future.”
Distinguished guests including former MPP Harinder Takhar and Gurbax Malhi, the first turbaned Member of Parliament in Canada, were also present and shared their reflections.
“Vaisakhi represents courage, sacrifice, and unity. It is heartening to witness such strong participation from the community and continued recognition of our heritage,” said Harinder Takhar.
“This celebration reminds us how far we have come as a community in Canada. It is a proud moment to see our culture being honoured at all levels,” added Gurbax Malhi.
Community leader Safdar Hussain also shared his thoughts on the occasion:
“Vaisakhi celebrations like this bring people of all backgrounds together and reflect the true spirit of Canada’s diversity. It is wonderful to see such unity and mutual respect among communities.”
Gian Paul, Chairperson of Flower City Friends Club, emphasized the importance of community participation and cultural connection:
“It is truly encouraging to see such a strong turnout from our community organizations. Events like these not only celebrate our heritage but also strengthen relationships and create opportunities for collaboration across communities.”
MPP Rob Cerjanec (Ajax) also extended his greetings and acknowledged the significance of the occasion:
“The spirit of Vaisakhi embodies inclusiveness and positivity. It is inspiring to be part of such a celebration that brings communities closer and celebrates shared values.”
The event concluded with closing remarks and a vote of thanks by MPP Jonathan Tsao, who expressed gratitude to all attendees, organizers, and community partners for making the evening a resounding success.
