TTC to Officially Rename Dundas Station as TMU Station This Weekend

Dundas Station, one of Toronto’s busiest downtown subway stops, will officially be renamed TMU Station this weekend, the TTC confirmed. The new name reflects the station’s close connection to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), located just steps away.

Updated maps, signage and wayfinding elements have already begun appearing throughout the Line 1 Yonge–University station. The TTC says all remaining work will be completed by December 7, when the new name is expected to be incorporated into subway announcements. TMU is covering the full cost of the rebranding, although the total amount has not been disclosed.

TMU president and vice-chancellor Mohamed Lachemi called the renaming “a significant milestone for the university,” saying it highlights both the institution’s central presence in the city and its commitment to contributing to Toronto’s growth and innovation.

The name change will also coincide with the creation of the Transit Innovation Yard, a new collaboration between the TTC, TMU and the university’s startup incubator, the DMZ. The hub aims to accelerate transit-focused research, development and technology partnerships across Canada. TTC Chair Jamaal Myers said the collaboration will give the transit agency access to “world-class research on transit.”

The move continues a broader effort in Toronto to remove the name of Henry Dundas from public spaces, due to the historical figure’s role in delaying the end of the transatlantic slave trade. Yonge–Dundas Square was renamed Sankofa Square in 2023 following a city council motion addressing Dundas’s legacy.

Another TTC station will also receive an updated name this weekend. Eglinton West Station will officially become Cedarvale Station on December 7, preparing for its connection to the long-delayed Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown. While the Crosstown does not yet have an opening date, its pedestrian underpass to Line 1 is already open.

The TTC says riders can expect all wayfinding materials, maps and announcements to be updated in time for the transition.
