TTC Boosts Line 1 and Streetcar Service Ahead of Return-to-Office Push

As more employees return to downtown offices, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is increasing subway and streetcar service across the city starting Sunday, November 16.

Line 1: More Trains During Peak Hours

Beginning Monday, riders on Line 1 (Yonge–University) will see trains arriving approximately every 2.5 minutes during both the morning and evening rush hours from Monday to Friday.
To support the enhanced frequency:

  • 10 additional trains will run during the morning rush
  • 15 additional trains will be added to evening peak service

Service levels will also increase outside peak hours throughout the day and on weekends, the TTC confirmed.

Streetcar and Bus Enhancements

Two major downtown streetcar routes will also see improved frequency:

  • 505 Dundas – service every 6 minutes during weekday peak hours and select weekend periods
  • 511 Bathurst – service every 6 minutes during peak hours and some weekend times

In Etobicoke, the 37 Islington bus will receive schedule adjustments during early morning and late evening periods to better connect with the 337 Islington night bus.

Leadership Praises Improvements

Speaking at a press conference Friday, Mayor Olivia Chow said these service increases will make a noticeable difference for commuters.

“More trains, more often will help to improve the experience for everyone who uses transit in our city,”
Mayor Olivia Chow

TTC CEO Mandeep Lali echoed the message, saying the changes reflect the agency’s commitment to “adding capacity in the right places at the right time.”

Part of a Broader Transit Enhancement Effort

This upgrade follows Line 2 (Bloor–Danforth) service increases rolled out in October, which included six additional trains during the morning rush, improving wait times to about 2.5 minutes.

The TTC says it will continue monitoring ridership patterns and adjusting service to meet demand as commuters return to regular routines.
