Trump-Putin Alaska Summit Ends Without Ukraine Peace Deal, Putin Gains Diplomatic Win

Anchorage, Alaska – August 15, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded a high-stakes three-hour meeting in Alaska without securing a ceasefire or concrete peace plan for Ukraine, leaving Putin with what analysts call a symbolic victory.

Trump described the talks as “extremely productive,” but acknowledged that “we haven’t quite got there” on resolving the war, citing unresolved “significant” sticking points — widely believed to be Russia’s demands for territorial concessions in eastern Ukraine. Despite earlier pledges to push for a ceasefire, the word was absent from both leaders’ closing remarks.

Putin, however, emerged with a boost to his international standing, receiving a red-carpet welcome and engaging directly with the U.S. president without Ukraine’s participation — breaking the long-held Western principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.”

The Russian leader also avoided new U.S. sanctions or tariffs, which Trump had previously threatened. Instead, the two pledged to meet again, with Putin suggesting Moscow as the next venue.

Former Canadian ambassador to Russia Jeremy Kinsman noted that the summit “re-legitimized” Putin, giving him a platform to press Russia’s case to Washington and bypass Kyiv.

While Trump promised to brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the discussions, experts believe Kyiv is unlikely to challenge the U.S. position publicly due to its heavy dependence on American support.

The outcome — no peace deal, no ceasefire, and no penalties for Russia — leaves questions over whether Trump’s touted dealmaking will deliver results in future talks. For Putin, the optics alone marked a significant diplomatic gain.
