China’s Wang Yi to Visit India for High-Level Border Talks, Eyes on Resuming Trade

Beijing/New Delhi – August 16, 2025 – China’s top diplomat and foreign minister, Wang Yi, will travel to India from August 18 to 20 for the 24th Special Representatives Meeting on the long-standing China-India border dispute, Beijing’s foreign ministry confirmed on Saturday.

The visit marks a fresh attempt by the two Asian giants to repair strained ties, with discussions expected to focus on easing tensions along their Himalayan frontier and exploring the resumption of border trade — halted since the deadly 2020 clash between troops.

While past cross-border trade was modest in volume, any revival carries heavy symbolic weight, signaling a potential thaw in relations. The move comes on the heels of Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s July trip to Beijing, and amid signs that both countries are seeking to rebuild cooperation in the face of global economic headwinds and geopolitical shifts.

Beyond border talks, recent engagements have hinted at a broader reset, with agreements under discussion to restart direct flights and issue tourist visas. Observers say these steps are part of a calibrated effort to stabilize a relationship defined in recent years by military tensions and economic competition.

Both nations remain key players in South Asia’s strategic landscape, and Wang’s visit is seen as a critical test of whether dialogue can translate into tangible progress on long-standing disputes.
