President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate Republican Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida as the next U.S. Attorney General. This decision, if approved by the Senate, will see Gaetz succeed Merrick Garland, who has been at the helm of the Department of Justice since 2021.

Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, commending Gaetz for his contributions in Congress, particularly for his focus on reforming the Department of Justice. In response, Gaetz expressed his enthusiasm on X, stating that it would be an honor to serve as Attorney General under Trump’s administration.

Gaetz’s nomination signals Trump’s continued emphasis on loyalty within his second administration. As a staunch Trump ally, Gaetz has been a vocal critic of the Department of Justice, especially in matters concerning its investigations into Trump. This move is widely seen as part of Trump’s broader strategy to align the DOJ with his administration’s objectives.

The nomination, however, is not without controversy. Gaetz remains under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for alleged sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. While he has denied any wrongdoing, and the Department of Justice ultimately declined to press charges following a separate sex-trafficking investigation, the Ethics Committee’s inquiry continues. Gaetz has stated his refusal to voluntarily cooperate with the committee’s probe.

Reaction to the announcement has been mixed on Capitol Hill. House Speaker Mike Johnson noted the strain on the GOP’s slim majority following Trump’s recent nominations of Reps. Elise Stefanik and Mike Waltz to roles in his administration. Senator Susan Collins of Maine described the pick as “shocking,” emphasizing the critical nature of the Senate’s role in vetting such appointments. Meanwhile, Idaho Representative Mike Simpson responded with incredulity when informed of the nomination.

Gaetz’s tenure in Congress has been marked by controversy and staunch partisanship. Known for his role in ousting then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in 2023, he has established himself as a polarizing figure within the Republican Party. His actions have often drawn attention to Trump’s political agenda, including his critiques of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into the former president.

On the day of the announcement, Gaetz accompanied Trump, Elon Musk, and others during Trump’s first visit to Washington, D.C., following his election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.

The confirmation process for Gaetz is anticipated to be contentious, with significant scrutiny expected regarding his qualifications, the ongoing ethics investigation, and the broader implications for the independence of the Department of Justice. The Senate’s hearings will play a pivotal role in determining whether Gaetz assumes the position.

This appointment underscores Trump’s commitment to reshaping the Justice Department in alignment with his administration’s priorities as he prepares to begin his second term in office.
