A festive holiday broadcast in downtown Brampton took an unexpected turn this week when Dr. Azad Goyat, a prominent figure behind the so-called Slum Landlord Association movement, was arrested after interrupting a live Santa Claus interview in Garden Square.
The disruption occurred during a children’s on-air Christmas segment filmed in front of families and passersby. According to officials, a small group carrying protest signs entered the broadcast zone without authorization. Their presence was not connected to the long-running landlord demonstrations historically held outside City Hall.
Security teams immediately instructed the group to leave to ensure the safety and continuity of the live broadcast. Two individuals refused to comply, prompting officers to arrest them under provincial trespass legislation. One of them was Dr. Goyat.
A Familiar Figure in Brampton Protests
Goyat has been the public face of weekly demonstrations opposing Brampton’s Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) program, which enforces safety standards under the Ontario Fire Code and Ontario Building Code. Although the Santa broadcast incident had no relation to the RRL protests, his involvement drew attention due to his history of confrontations with municipal authorities.
His political ambitions, however, have not translated into voter support. In the 2022 Brampton municipal election for Wards 9 and 10, Goyat secured only 1,008 votes — less than five percent — finishing near the bottom of the race. A later attempt at provincial office also ended with similarly weak results.
Goyat Responds With Defiance
Following his arrest, Goyat posted online:
“Guess who was Charged by Peel Police? Dr Goyat will always fight against corruption.”
He accused the City of operating like a “dictatorship,” claiming that being charged under trespass rules validated his stance. Supporters echoed his narrative, while critics countered that disrupting a children’s Christmas program was inappropriate and reckless.
A Goodwill Event Overshadowed
Observers were struck by the bizarre nature of the incident. The Santa broadcast was designed to spread holiday cheer, support families, and highlight children’s causes — not to serve as a stage for political theatrics.
Turning a wholesome seasonal tradition into a moment of personal protest left many questioning why anyone would choose Santa — of all figures — as the backdrop for confrontation.
