Transport Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria Unveils GO 2.0: 23 New Stations and Expanded Service Promised by Ontario Conservatives

Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform transit across the Greater Golden Horseshoe, promising 23 new GO train stations and expanded service if re-elected. The announcement, made today by Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria in Brampton, outlines a sweeping initiative dubbed GO 2.0, aimed at easing gridlock and connecting millions of residents to faster, more convenient transit options.

The proposed expansion includes new passenger lines across mid-town Toronto, direct service from Bolton to Union Station, and additional routes into York Region. Two-way service for Kitchener and Milton lines will also be enhanced, providing greater flexibility for commuters.

To accommodate the increased passenger capacity, the Conservatives plan to construct new freight-exclusive tracks adjacent to Highway 407 in Peel Region, freeing up existing lines for expanded GO service.

“GO 2.0 is a transformational project that will bring transit closer to millions of Ontarians, reduce congestion, and support the growth of our communities,” said Sarkaria. “This is about building a transit system that meets the needs of today and tomorrow.”

The project, which will be developed in partnership with the federal government and rail operators Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Canadian National, aims to address the transit demands of Ontario’s fastest-growing regions. However, no timeline or cost estimate has been provided for the initiative.

The announcement comes as the Progressive Conservatives campaign for re-election, positioning transit expansion as a key pillar of their platform. With Ontario’s population expected to continue growing, the proposed GO 2.0 plan seeks to future-proof the province’s transit infrastructure and improve connectivity across the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
