Trailblazing Canadian Astronaut and Statesman Marc Garneau Passes Away at 76

Marc Garneau, Canada’s first astronaut and a respected federal cabinet minister, has died at the age of 76. A moment of silence was held in the House of Commons Wednesday evening in tribute to the pioneering figure who left a profound mark on both science and politics in Canada.

Garneau made history in 1984 as the first Canadian in space, later serving as president of the Canadian Space Agency. His legacy in science was matched by a distinguished political career. He served as the Member of Parliament for a Montreal-area riding from 2008 to 2023 and held several senior cabinet roles in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, including minister of transport and minister of foreign affairs.

Garneau’s wife, Pam Garneau, confirmed that he had been unwell in his final days but passed away peacefully. “Marc faced his final days with the same strength, clarity, and grace that defined his life,” she shared, also expressing heartfelt thanks to the medical team who cared for him.

Born in Quebec City, Garneau studied engineering physics at the Royal Military College in Kingston. His life’s work—spanning the stars and the House of Commons—leaves a lasting legacy of courage, intellect, and public service.
