Tragic Incident in China: Driver Kills 35, Injures 43 in Zhuhai Sports Centre Attack

A horrific event unfolded in Zhuhai, southern China, as a 62-year-old man, identified only by the surname Fan, drove his car into a crowded sports centre, killing 35 people and injuring 43 others. The incident took place late Monday night, just before the city’s annual airshow hosted by the People’s Liberation Army.

Fan, who was found in the vehicle with self-inflicted neck wounds and a knife, is suspected to have acted out of frustration over financial disputes from his recent divorce. Currently unconscious and under medical care, Fan has been detained by police, who continue their investigation into the motive.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged local officials to prioritize social stability and ensure comprehensive care for the injured. A team has been sent from Beijing to oversee the situation.

The incident, while discussed heavily outside of China, faced significant censorship within the country. Searches on Chinese platforms yielded minimal information, while videos and images shared internationally on platforms like X showcased the devastating aftermath. Chinese censors have tightened online control, especially with the airshow underway, as part of a broader effort to maintain national stability.

The sports centre, a popular gathering spot for the community, has announced an indefinite closure in the wake of this tragedy.
