Toronto is set to receive a new 942 area code, becoming the fourth overlay code for Canada’s largest city alongside the familiar 416, 437, and 647. The new area code, approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), will be gradually introduced beginning April 26, 2025, and will apply to all new telephone numbers within the same geographic region.
According to the Canadian Numbering Administrator, this move ensures the availability of millions of new numbers without disrupting existing ones. All current phone numbers and local calling areas remain unchanged, and 10-digit dialing will continue to be mandatory for all local calls.
“The introduction of a new area code creates millions of additional telephone numbers without affecting the existing numbers,” said Kelly T. Walsh, Program Manager at the Canadian Numbering Administrator.
A Look Back at Area Code History
Toronto’s telecommunications journey began with the 416 area code, one of the original area codes established in 1947. Over the decades, as demand for phone numbers grew, additional area codes were introduced: 647 in 2001 and 437 in 2013.
The need for multiple area codes stems from increasing population, mobile phone use, and digital services. The shift to 10-digit dialing, once required only in areas with multiple codes, became mandatory nationwide in 2023 to support the launch of 988, Canada’s new mental health crisis line.
Toronto’s rotary phones, manual operators, and early exchanges have long since given way to direct dialing and modern telecommunications—but each new code tells the story of a growing, connected city.
The 942 area code is just the latest chapter.
