Design Pays Tribute to Black History Month, Proceeds to Support Black Communities
he Toronto Maple Leafs have unveiled a special-edition logo to mark their upcoming “Black Excellence” game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Scotiabank Arena.
In celebration of Black History Month, the Leafs collaborated with Toronto-based designer and illustrator Toji Nola, who crafted a logo that pays tribute to Black culture, resilience, and achievement while also honoring the team’s storied legacy.
Nola, who grew up in Newmarket, Ontario, shared that his design was inspired by intricate patterns found in traditional African art, which often carry deeper symbolic meanings.
Key design elements include:
- “Pantone Black 7” pattern: Symbolizing strength and unity within the Black community.
- Gold trim: Highlights the black-on-black design, creating a striking contrast.
- Zigzags: Representing life’s ups and downs and the resilience of Black individuals.
- Large triangle: A symbol of achievement and excellence.
- 13 root prints: Representing the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 13 Stanley Cup championships, while also symbolizing heritage and ancestry as the foundation of identity.
“I wanted to create something that serves as a reminder of brilliance, resilience, and accomplishment,” Nola wrote in a social media post.
The “Black Excellence” logo will feature prominently on off-ice apparel worn by players and staff, and limited-edition merchandise will be available at Real Sports Apparel during the game.
- 20% of proceeds from hoodie sales will be donated to the Foundation for Black Communities, which supports Black-led initiatives across Canada.
- A youth skater from the Black community will participate in the pre-game opening ceremony.
- Canadian country artist Sacha will deliver a special intermission performance.
- Exclusive in-game giveaways will include Toronto Maple Leafs shirts featuring the “Black Excellence” logo.
Saturday’s game marks the Leafs’ first matchup since the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, and captain Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander will aim to build on their momentum.
Toronto currently sits three points behind the Florida Panthers in the Atlantic Division standings as they gear up for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Hockey Night in Canada, live from Scotiabank Arena.
