Three teenagers, including a 14-year-old, are facing a total of 17 charges after Durham Regional Police arrested them in a stolen vehicle incident in Whitby on Saturday. One of the youths has also been charged in connection with two jewelry store crimes in Pickering and Oshawa earlier in the week.
Police spotted a stolen Honda SUV near Twin Streams Drive and Country Lane and attempted to block it. The driver rammed a police cruiser and fled, but crashed into a tree a short distance away. The three suspects then attempted to escape on foot.
With assistance from the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, K9 Unit, Tactical Support Unit, and Robbery Unit, officers located and arrested all three youths.
Investigators allege one of the teens was involved in a smash-and-grab robbery Thursday at Peoples Jewellers in Pickering City Centre, as well as an attempted robbery the same day at Oshawa Jewellery in the Oshawa Centre. That investigation remains ongoing.
A 16-year-old Whitby resident faces multiple charges, including robbery, attempted robbery, dangerous operation, failing to stop for police, leaving the scene of a collision, possession of stolen property, disguise with intent, and weapons offences. He was held for a bail hearing.
A 14-year-old and another 16-year-old, both from Whitby, were charged with possession of stolen property and disguise with intent. They were released on a promise to appear.
