Tensions flared in Brampton and Mississauga this week as Sikh and Hindu communities faced off amid rising political and religious divisions fueled by the strained relations between Canada and India. Members of the Sikh community have been guarding the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Malton Gurdwara, armed with bats and swords, after a series of violent altercations with pro-India activists. These clashes come on the heels of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent allegations that Indian government agents may have been involved in the 2023 killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
Last week’s unrest began with a protest outside Brampton’s Hindu Sabha temple, where Sikh demonstrators claimed they were protesting against Indian government surveillance, not the temple itself. However, the situation quickly escalated as counter-protesters, some masked and armed, rallied outside the gurdwara in response. Peel Regional Police deployed riot officers to control the crowds, and several arrests were made.
Local leaders have condemned the violence, with Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown denouncing inflammatory rhetoric. Amid growing concerns, community and religious leaders urged restraint, warning of the dangers of radicalization on both sides of the issue.
As political divides deepen, Peel Regional Police have called for future Indian consulate events to be held at non-religious venues to avoid further conflicts, highlighting Canada’s struggle to manage the local impact of the Canada-India diplomatic dispute.
