Tensions Escalate at Sea as Israeli Forces Detain Canadians During Gaza Aid Flotilla Mission

A dramatic confrontation unfolded in the eastern Mediterranean after Israeli forces intercepted a humanitarian flotilla attempting to reach Gaza, with organizers claiming six Canadians were among dozens of international activists detained during the operation off the coast of Cyprus.

The aid mission, organized by the Global Sumud Flotilla and affiliated groups including the Freedom Flotilla, was part of a large-scale effort aimed at challenging Israel’s long-standing naval blockade of Gaza and drawing global attention to worsening humanitarian conditions inside the Palestinian territory.

According to organizers, five Canadian activists travelling with the Global Sumud Flotilla and one Canadian connected to the Freedom Flotilla were detained after Israeli forces boarded multiple vessels roughly 250 nautical miles from Gaza’s coastline. The flotilla reportedly included more than 50 boats that had departed from Marmaris, Turkey, carrying activists and humanitarian supporters from several countries.

Among those onboard was Ontario resident Shahid Sadabad, who told The Canadian Press before the interception that the Canadian contingent had agreed to begin a hunger strike if detained by Israeli authorities.

The operation unfolded publicly and in broad daylight, unlike previous flotilla interceptions that often occurred during nighttime operations. Livestream footage broadcast by the flotilla showed activists putting on life jackets and raising their hands as Israeli military personnel in tactical gear approached and boarded the vessels. The live broadcast abruptly ended shortly after troops boarded one of the boats.

Additional footage circulating online appeared to show Israeli speedboats surrounding the vessels while armed personnel instructed activists to gather at the front of the ships. Organizers said at least 17 boats had been intercepted during the first several hours of the operation.

The flotilla interceptions reportedly occurred outside Cypriot territorial waters. A Cypriot official stated that Israel did not request operational assistance from Cyprus but informed authorities that all individuals aboard the intercepted vessels were in good health.

The mission represented the latest international attempt to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza, which has been in place since 2007 after Hamas took control of the territory following Palestinian parliamentary elections.

Israel has consistently defended the blockade as a security measure designed to prevent Hamas from importing weapons and strengthening its military capabilities. Egypt, which controls Gaza’s only non-Israeli border crossing, has also imposed heavy restrictions on movement into and out of the territory.

However, critics and humanitarian groups argue that the blockade has created devastating humanitarian consequences for ordinary Palestinians and amounts to collective punishment of Gaza’s civilian population.

The incident comes amid continuing international scrutiny of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and growing global activism surrounding the conflict. As of Monday evening, Global Affairs Canada had acknowledged requests for comment regarding the detained Canadians but had not yet issued an official response.
