Sikh Organization Proposes Military Heroes Memorial at Brampton’s Chinguacousy Park

A Sikh organization has submitted a proposal to the City of Brampton to build a permanent memorial at Chinguacousy Park honouring Sikh soldiers who fought and died in the historic Battle of Saragarhi in 1897. The plan, led by the Saragarhi Foundation Canada Inc., seeks to create a lasting tribute to 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment who defended their post against Afghan forces during one of the most legendary last stands in military history.

In a letter to Brampton city councillors, Dr. Kuljit Singh Janjua, Vice-Chair of the Saragarhi Foundation Canada, requested council’s support to move the project forward. “We kindly request city council’s endorsement and support in moving this project forward. The Foundation is prepared to work closely with the City of Brampton on planning, design, and implementation to ensure that the monument reflects both historical accuracy and the values of our community,” the letter stated.

While Dr. Janjua was scheduled to present the proposal to council today, his appearance was cancelled. Councillors instead voted to refer the request to city staff for further review. Staff will assess the proposal’s merits and bring a report back to council at a later date.

The Foundation identified Brampton as the ideal location for the monument, noting that the city is home to one of the largest Sikh and South Asian communities outside India. The proposal emphasizes the Sikh community’s deep social, cultural, and economic contributions to Brampton and frames the memorial as both a historical and community-building initiative.

“Establishing this monument in Brampton will not only honour these martyrs but also symbolize the city’s deep commitment to diversity, inclusion, and heritage preservation,” the proposal stated.

The memorial would also serve as a site for annual remembrance ceremonies and as an educational platform for schools and residents, helping future generations understand the bravery and sacrifice of Sikh soldiers. Chinguacousy Park was chosen for its accessibility, visibility, and cultural significance, making it a fitting location for the tribute.

Similar Saragarhi memorials have already been erected in England and India, and advocates believe this Brampton monument would reflect the city’s global standing as a centre of Sikh heritage and multiculturalism. If approved, the monument would become a landmark honouring military heroism and community identity.
