Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre, along with a Canadian delegation, embarked on an impactful first day in Jordan to gain insights into the challenges faced by refugees and the efforts of international organizations working in the region. The day featured comprehensive briefings, site visits, and inspiring interactions with refugees and community leaders.
The day began with an informative briefing from Canada’s Ambassador to Jordan, Tarik Ali Khan, at the Canadian Embassy in Amman. Ambassador Khan, along with embassy staff, provided an overview of Canada’s ongoing role in Jordan, focusing on humanitarian efforts and bilateral relations.
This was followed by a detailed briefing from Islamic Relief Jordan, which shed light on their critical programs supporting vulnerable communities, particularly refugees, in the region.
The delegation then visited the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) Headquarters in Jordan, where they received insights into the agency’s operations and their impact on Palestinian refugees.

As part of the visit, the delegation toured an UNRWA school for Palestinian refugees, meeting an inspiring group of young student parliamentarians who had been elected by their peers. The students shared their visions for leadership, underscoring the resilience and determination of the next generation amid challenging circumstances.
The delegation traveled to Palestinian refugee camps, where they had the opportunity to meet directly with refugees, hear their personal stories, and understand their lived realities. These interactions provided firsthand perspectives on the challenges faced by displaced populations, including education, healthcare, and access to basic resources.
Shafqat Ali MP emphasized the importance of Canada’s role in supporting humanitarian efforts and fostering partnerships to address the needs of displaced populations.
“Today’s visits were a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of refugees, particularly the youth who are striving to create a brighter future for their communities. Canada remains committed to supporting international organizations and host countries like Jordan that are working tirelessly to address these challenges,” said MP Ali.
The delegation’s visit marks a significant step in strengthening Canada’s engagement in humanitarian issues and reinforcing its commitment to global partnerships. Over the next few days, the delegation will continue to meet with local and international stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration and advocacy.
