Ruby Sahota and Peel Region Collaborate on $55.3M Homelessness Relief Initiative

Government of Canada and Region of Peel Commit Over $55.3 Million to Address Homelessness and Enhance Shelter Capacity

Ruby Sahota, MP, along with the Government of Canada, in partnership with the Region of Peel, is pleased to announce a joint investment exceeding $55.3 million aimed at providing sustainable housing solutions and support services for individuals experiencing homelessness in the community. This significant funding initiative highlights a shared commitment to tackling the urgent issue of homelessness and enhancing the well-being of residents across the Peel region.

  1. Expansion of Emergency Shelter Overflow Spaces: A portion of the funds will be allocated to create additional emergency shelter overflow spaces. This initiative is designed to offer immediate relief and safe accommodations for individuals currently residing in encampments, ensuring they have access to essential services and support.
  2. Redesign and Expansion of the Wilkinson Road Shelter: The Wilkinson Road Shelter, which currently provides temporary emergency housing for homeless men in Brampton and Caledon, will undergo significant redesign and expansion. The shelter presently serves up to 60 men, with 16 beds reserved for individuals with special needs. The planned enhancements will increase capacity and improve facilities to better serve the community’s needs

The Region of Peel has been facing a substantial increase in homelessness, with the number of known encampments rising from 125 in 2022 to 258 in 2023. This surge has placed immense pressure on the region’s shelter system, which has been operating at nearly 350% capacity, necessitating the use of 11 hotels and motels to manage the overflow.

In response to this escalating crisis, the Region of Peel has been actively seeking sustainable solutions, including the development of a new model focused on establishing dedicated shelter facilities and a Regional Reception Centre near Pearson International Airport. These efforts are aimed at providing more structured and long-term support for individuals experiencing homelessness.

“Our government is committed to ensuring that every Canadian has a safe and affordable place to call home. This investment with the Region of Peel is a testament to our dedication to addressing homelessness and supporting our most vulnerable citizens.” Ruby Sahota added.

She further said “The Region of Peel is grateful for the federal government’s support in tackling the homelessness crisis. This funding will enable us to enhance our shelter capacity and provide immediate assistance to those in need, while we continue to work on long-term housing solutions.”

The Wilkinson Road Shelter offers temporary emergency housing for homeless men in Brampton and Caledon. In addition to lodging, the shelter provides services such as employment and housing support, financial assistance through Ontario Works, health clinics, mental health and addiction support, life skills training, recreation, and pastoral care
