Ontario Government Announces Underground LRT Extension to Downtown Brampton

Transformative Transit Expansion Unveiled for Brampton and Mississauga

The Ontario government has announced a major step forward for Brampton’s transit future with the decision to extend the Hazel McCallion Line (LRT) underground along Main Street into downtown Brampton. Premier Doug Ford revealed the plan today, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing world-class transit infrastructure.

“By tunneling the Hazel McCallion Line into downtown Brampton, we’re helping tens of thousands of daily riders connect seamlessly to world-class transit that will extend across the region,” said Premier Doug Ford. “As we continue expanding the Hazel McCallion Line, improving GO service, and building new roads and highways like Highway 413, we’re ensuring Brampton residents can travel quickly and conveniently.”

“This is a transformative moment for Brampton,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “The commitment from Premier Ford and the Government of Ontario to fund this LRT extension, including tunneling into downtown, is a game changer. It’s a bold step toward shaping a future where Brampton thrives as a dynamic, modern city. This project not only enhances connectivity but also boosts economic development and aligns with our vision to make Brampton one of Canada’s most vibrant urban hubs. We’re excited to work with the province to bring this vision to life.”

Regional Councillor Rowena Santos also expressed her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its significance for sustainable growth. “This underground LRT extension is more than just a transit project; it’s about building a Brampton that’s future-ready,” said Councillor Santos. “By reducing congestion and improving connectivity, we’re laying the groundwork for a cleaner, greener, and more accessible city. This investment supports our downtown revitalization efforts and demonstrates that the province sees Brampton as a critical part of the region’s growth story.”

The extension will include an underground tunnel from the Brampton Gateway Terminal to downtown Brampton. Metrolinx will lead the next phase, involving detailed planning and design to align with Brampton’s vision for Main Street and its downtown core. The project will also optimize connectivity to the Brampton Innovation District GO Station and other transit networks.

“As one of the fastest-growing cities in our province, Brampton residents deserve access to world-class transit to meet the needs of a vibrant, thriving community,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Last year, we made a promise to pave the way for a new priority transit extension that will shorten the daily commutes of tens of thousands of people in Brampton, and we’re getting it done.”

The Hazel McCallion Line’s extension will integrate key transit systems, including GO Transit, Brampton Transit, Züm, and MiWay, creating a seamless travel experience for commuters and alleviating road congestion.

Brampton North MPP Graham McGregor also highlighted the long-term benefits of the project. “This is a proud day for Brampton. The underground LRT extension ensures that we’re prioritizing not only convenience but also the safety and efficiency of our transit system. This project underscores our commitment to building infrastructure that will serve the needs of residents today and for generations to come.”

“This is part of our largest transit expansion in North America, and Brampton is playing a central role in it,” McGregor added. “By investing in this project, we’re ensuring our city remains a vital economic and transit hub for the entire region.”

The Hazel McCallion Line is part of Ontario’s historic $70 billion transit expansion, aimed at enhancing public transit and supporting the province’s infrastructure needs over the next decade.

The Hazel McCallion Line’s underground expansion is set to redefine Brampton’s transportation network, offering residents and commuters a faster, more connected, and more sustainable way to navigate the region.
