Rogers Defends ‘Unlimited’ Data Plans Against Competition Bureau Allegations

Telecom giant argues its advertising is fair and widely understood

Rogers Communications is pushing back against the Competition Bureau’s claims that its unlimited data plans are misleading. The Bureau alleges that Rogers’ marketing gives the false impression of limitless data, while speeds are drastically reduced—by over 99%—once customers hit their cap.

In its response, Rogers argues that its advertising practices are consistent with industry standards used by all major telecom providers. The company also claims that it clearly discloses data limitations and that most customers never reach their data cap.

The Competition Bureau has asked the Competition Tribunal to order Rogers to stop the allegedly deceptive advertising, pay a penalty, and compensate affected customers.
