Ontario’s $200 Rebate Cheques Face Cashing Issues

Some residents report bounced cheques, delays in receiving payments

The Ontario government has issued over 11 million $200 tax rebate cheques, but some residents are struggling to cash them.

Several Ontarians have reported their cheques “bouncing” or failing to clear when deposited, causing frustration. Some bank customers, including those with CIBC and TD, say their deposits were initially rejected but later accepted through mobile banking. Others are still waiting for their rebates to arrive in the mail.

The Ministry of Finance acknowledged past printing issues affecting a small number of RBC-issued cheques but has not provided updated figures on ongoing problems. A spokesperson assured that the government is committed to resolving any concerns.

Residents like Nick Delaney, who banks with TD, described the process as “poorly planned,” while others, like Michael Murray from Whitby, say the rebate would be more effective if issued via direct deposit. “I have a friend whose cheque bounced five times, and her husband hasn’t received his yet,” he shared.

The ministry has set up an online portal where residents can check their rebate status. Cheques are expected to arrive by early February.
