At a meeting of the National Board of Directors, the following decisions were finalized, in accordance with the party’s constitution:
- Leadership Vote and Announcement: The leadership vote will conclude, and the new leader will be announced, on March 9, 2025.
- Eligibility Deadline: Individuals must register as a Liberal by January 27, 2025, to be eligible to vote in the leadership race.
- Candidacy Declaration: Prospective leadership candidates must declare their intention to run by January 23, 2025, and pay an entrance fee of $350,000.
- Leadership Committees:
- Suzanne Cowan (Past Party President) and Marc-Etienne Vien (LPC(Q) Director) will co-chair the Leadership Vote Committee, responsible for organizing and overseeing the voting process.
- MP Patricia Lattanzio and John Herhalt (Chair of the Federal Liberal Agency of Canada) will co-chair the Leadership Expense Committee, which will finalize expense rules and set spending limits for candidates.
Updated Registered Liberal Requirements
As part of its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the democratic process, the party updated the criteria for becoming and retaining status as a Registered Liberal. To qualify, individuals must:
- Be at least 14 years old;
- Support the party’s mission and principles;
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or have status under the Indian Act;
- Not be a member of another federal political party;
- Not declare candidacy for the House of Commons as a representative of any party other than the Liberal Party.
