RCMP Bust $10-Million Synthetic Drug Lab in Rural Ontario, Seizing Firearms and 239 kg of Narcotics

SCHOMBERG, ONT. — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have dismantled a large-scale synthetic drug laboratory operating out of a rural property in southern Ontario, seizing nearly $10 million worth of narcotics, firearms, and massive quantities of chemical precursors used to produce illicit substances.

At a news conference Friday in Newmarket, RCMP officials announced that three people have been arrested and charged with 33 offences, including drug production, trafficking, and unlawful possession of firearms.

The investigation began in the spring after authorities flagged a suspicious chemical order placed through a business. By July, police had identified three suspects believed to be manufacturing synthetic drugs in a clandestine lab hidden in Schomberg, Ontario, and later uncovered a secondary storage site in Port Colborne.

RCMP Superintendent Jonathan Ko said the operation was both large and dangerous, requiring 10 days to neutralize and clean up over 20,000 litres of hazardous waste. “The swift, coordinated actions and successful outcomes like this are only possible through strong collaboration and trust between agencies,” Ko said.

The lab was found in an outbuilding on a rented rural property, with the owners reportedly unaware of any criminal activity. Inside, officers discovered a pill press, chemical glassware, drug recipes, and large flasks used to produce MDMA, methamphetamine, and GHB — totaling approximately 239 kilograms of drugs.

Police also seized $8,000 in cash, firearms, and an assortment of precursor chemicals capable of producing millions of dollars’ worth of synthetic drugs.

RCMP Chief Superintendent Chris Leather praised the operation as a major win for public safety. “We prevented the future production of millions of dollars’ worth of synthetic drugs, protected our communities from harm, and averted a potentially dangerous public safety incident posed by the unsafe storage of chemicals,” he said.

Leather added that the bust reflects a “growing national trend” of domestic drug manufacturing. “Law enforcement and public health agencies are seeing more in-country production, greater chemical sophistication, and a shift away from importation,” he said, emphasizing the need for enhanced intelligence sharing, tighter chemical controls, and rapid enforcement.

The RCMP confirmed that Health Canada is analyzing the seized substances and chemicals. Since January 2024, the RCMP has dismantled 50 synthetic drug labs across Canada — a stark indicator of the country’s escalating battle against domestic narcotics production.
